Residents Speak Out About New CVS Pharmacy in Maplewood

Residents raised concerns about adequate barriers between their homes and a new CVS pharmacy possibly going in near their neighborhood.

A plan to rezone 7468 Manchester Road into a planned unit development (PUD) for a proposed CVS Pharmacy was approved during Tuesday night's Maplewood City Council meeting. A CVS pharmacy has proposed to take over the space at Auto Plaza Ford, which covers 2.08 acres of developed land and .656 acres of undeveloped land east of Big Bend Boulevard for future development. During a public hearing at the meeting, a group of residents from the neighborhood behind the development—at the corner of Big Bend and Hazel Avenue—voiced concerns about living near the pharmacy. While some residents asked city council about better barriers between their neighborhood and the business center, others rejected the idea of the pharmacy completely. "I've lived on…

Many thanks to the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce for sharing this information with the community. Have some news to share? E-mail editor Ryan Martin at ryan.martin@patch.com. The Citizen of the Year Award was awarded to Maplewood Mayor James White. Mayor White grew up in and has continued to reside here all of his life. After spending 30 years as a St. Louis County police officer, he served 10 years as Maplewood's police chief, for which his daughter described as “a dream come true”. As chief of police, White is credited with improving the professionalism of the department and making operational changes that ensured officers had the proper equipment. After retiring as chief, White continued his public service efforts by running for mayor …

CORRECTION: Maplewood Aims to Lower Property Taxes

If all goes as planned, residents would see a tax break for third consecutive year.

*Correction (1:59 p.m.) — An earlier version of this article listed incorrect math to calculate a homeowner's expected tax bill. We are sorry for the error. Maplewood residents can look forward to a rollback in their property taxes this year, if assessed valuation figures supplied to the city by St. Louis County in mid-March remain the same. The rollback—a recommendation of Mayor James White—would be the third consecutive rollback for the city’s residents. If the valuation figures are still correct, residents will see their property taxes stay the same or go down by $0.01, which amounts to to $0.7910 per $100 assessed value. *If you own a $100,000 home, that only saves about $1.90 per year. But at a time when assessed valuation continues …

If citizens actually sat down and calculated the % of increase in their property taxes and compared it to their % increase in income, there would be a revolt. My husband does this calculation every year. It seems that most cities aren't being as conscientious about this matter as Maplewood. Kudos to you.   more ›

Maplewood Residents Respond: Keep Our Post Office

Residents and business owners filled city hall to send their message to the postmaster of St. Louis.

Terry Ryan and her husband, a pastor at a Maplewood church, have one car that they spend $25 a month on gas on. They chose to live in Maplewood because it’s a community they could walk everywhere in. “We walk to work, we walk to school, we walk to the shops, we walk to the post office,” she said. Ryan was one of about 70 people who filled the city council chambers at Maplewood City Hall on Tuesday afternoon at a meeting to tell the St. Louis postmaster that they want all their post office services to remain. In order to save about $165,000, the U.S. Postal Service is considering closing the counter retail portion of the Maplewood Post Office. Part of the process to decide if a branch is to be closed is to hold a public comment meeting. The…

Mayor Proclaims "Paramount Jewelers' Day" in Maplewood

The Maplewood business celebrated its 65th anniversary on Thursday.

In 1950, Sam Scott walked through downtown Maplewood and happened upon a small jewelry store. He had just left a larger jewelry store, and decided to buy a ring from the smaller one, Paramount Jewelers. More than 60 years later, the Maplewood business completed a ring for Scott's 30-year-old granddaughter. It's that kind of family tradition that proprietor Paul Buenger celebrated during a party at the store on Thursday. Scott was recognized in front of a crowd of 50 for being the store's longest-running customer. Mayor James White also proclaimed August 25, 2011, as Paramount Jewelers' Day in Maplewood, noting the store's iconic neon sign and its dedication to downtown Maplewood during the good times and bad. Jerry Gibbs, president of the …
