Solar Panels at MRH Provide a Green Lesson to Students

The school district installed 40 solar panels.

The installation of 40 solar panels on top of the cafeteria at MRH doesn't just have environmental benefits--it's a built-in lesson for the school district's science teachers to use, according to a report from MRH's microCHIP. In the attached video, MRH Director of Buildings and Grounds Beth Rowland explains the impact the solar panels have on the school district's energy needs.  The solar panels displace the energy used by approximately 61 computers over the course of the school year, she said.

QuikTrip Referendum Pushes Forward With More Signatures

Petitioners turned in more signatures to Maplewood City Hall this week. Here's the latest update on the potential referendum.

Days after petitioners were notified that they were 79 signatures short of forcing a referendum on the potential QuikTrip redevelopment, they turned in more than 200 signatures to Maplewood City Hall.  On Tuesday afternoon, City Manager Marty Corcoran confirmed that city officials had received the signatures and had delivered them to the St. Louis County Board of Elections for verification.  The petition process began after Maplewood City Council voted on Nov. 27 to allow QuikTrip to move its Maplewood store from the current location on Big Bend Boulevard to the northwest corner of Big Bend and Manchester Road. The approval drew scrutiny from the Maplewood Richmond Heights Board of Education and several families within the school district…

QuikTrip Gains Preliminary Approval Amid Residential Opposition

Nearly 40 people attended Monday's planning and zoning commission meeting to witness whether QuikTrip would gain preliminary approval to move toward the intersection of Manchester Road and Big Bend Boulevard.

A plan that paves the way for QuikTrip's move to the intersection of Manchester Road and Big Bend Boulevard gained preliminary approval amid an outcry of opposition from Maplewood Richmond Heights parents on Monday evening. In a 3-2 vote, the Maplewood Planning and Zoning Commission offered its approval of rezoning the northwest corner of the intersection to allow QuikTrip's opening. A sixth member abstained. The move still requires final approval from city council. If approved, QuikTrip would move from its location at the intersection of Big Bend and Flora Avenue to the current Maplewood Scooter Company* located beside the high school building.
