Moms Talk Q&A: How Does Your Family Stay Physically Active?

With so many families constantly on-the-go, what do you to make time for physical activity?

Between school, sports, extracurriculars and Xbox, kids might sometimes forget about making time for physical activity, even if we all recognize the importance of exercise. What do you do as a parent to encourage physical activity? How do you make the time? And, most importantly, what tips can you share for other moms and dads in the community? Please jump in and offer your thoughts in the comments box below. Our Moms Council members will share their stories too. And if you missed last week's Moms Talk Q&A, we talked about what shocks parents in today's society.

We like walking. Actually our dog Koa likes it when we take him walking. The nature trails rank ten plus tail wags. Sometimes we see an interesting critter (to chase) like a groundhog or a fox. Although we haven't seen any yet, some of our neighbors have seen deer in the woods. Koa is hopeful for an encounter. In the summer time you will find us all at the Brentwood Swim Club. An evening swim is …   more ›

Moms Talk Q&A: When Do You Talk to Kids About Sex?

What age is appropriate?

The birds and the bees. As difficult as it may be, it's a subject that every family must talk about. When should parents start talking to their children about sex? Does it depend on the parent? On the child? Maybe you don't talk about it at all? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Please jump in and share your stories in the comments box below. Our Moms Council members will offer their wisdom too. And if you missed last week's discussion, we talked about how many extracurriculars are good for children.

When I was pregnant with our son, our 4 year-old daughter asked how the baby would get out of my tummy. We explained the process using terms a child would understand and without a lot of graphic detail but with perhaps too much information. Our daughter looked at me incredulously and said "You're kidding?!" Clearly it was a case of TMI (too much information). Like TP, we've always let the kids …   more ›

Moms Talk Q&A: How Do You Deal With Bullies?

From the perspective of a parent, identifying bullying behavior can be tough. But once you do, then what?

The Moms Council offers responses below, and we encourage you to jump in with your experiences, too. Denise Lee Dealing with bullying is tough — really tough.  My natural response with my kids is to go into hyper-protective-mom-mode with sonic speed. But my natural response may not help the situation and may in fact exacerbate it. So I have to navigate…

Bullies are everywhere, but that does not mean their behavior should be tolerated. When we were growing up it was easy to spot (and avoid) bullies, but today our children deal with "faceless" bullies on-line. Bullies get to hide behind a screen name and don't have to actually face the people they intimidate or tease. Parents and teachers need to have candid discussions with their children and …   more ›

Even though Whole Foods can get expensive, they have some reasonably priced dinner specials on different days of the week ranging from rotisserie chickens to paninis. It is a great way to eat affordable healthy (and delicious) meals for busy families. When I was pregnant my husband was left to do all of the shopping (I couldn't stand to be around food) and it was a foolproof way to make sure we …   more ›

Victoria: I agree completely with your comment – “PAT is essentially an investment in our community”. There is an interesting article by Liz Szabo in USA Today (http://yourlife.usatoday.com/parenting-family/story/2011/02/Early-childhood-education-benefits-both-kids-taxpayers-study-says/43259964/1) which described a study from the National Institutes of Health; the study found that every dollar …   more ›

As a new mom I appreciate all of these great ideas! This is the first winter with my son, Jack (8 months), but we have enjoyed sledding down the hill in our front yard, walking around the Missouri Botanical Garden, and making last minute trips to Whole Foods (infants find the simplest things amusing) on snowy days. We have even found swimming at The Heights is a nice treat – nothing beats …   more ›

Whiz Kid of the Week: Nominate a Kid or Teen

This new feature relies on nominations from the community to honor kids and teens for doing great things.

Know a great teen who made Eagle Scout? Or a great kid who helped a neighbor during the winter storm? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree. Each week, Maplewood-Brentwood Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to editor Ryan Martin at ryan.martin@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the following information: If your nominee is selected, we'll contact you and assign a photographer to take a photo. For questions, e-mail ryan.martin@patch.com.

Calling Maplewood-Brentwood Moms: We Need Your Help

We're adding a Moms Council to help with coverage ideas. We want you to join.

Okay, moms, I'm using my lifeline here. Maplewood-Brentwood Patch needs your help. I'm really wanting to expand our coverage of issues, events and stories that affect moms and families on a daily basis, but I realize we can't do it without a mom's true wisdom and understanding. So, like any smart son has learned, I'm calling for backup. Maplewood-Brentwood Patch is adding a Moms Council—an advisory board similar to a readers board you might find at a newspaper. The Moms Council will be comprised of a few local mothers (fathers are okay too!) who are passionate about Patch's mission and want to offer support and guidance regarding coverage plans. Are you a working mom, stay-at-home mom, Mr. Mom, young mom or grandmom? I want to hear from …
