Is Maplewood's Boom Slowing Down?

A line in St. Louis Magazine's November issue drew a response from Maplewood's community development director, who called the sentence a "pointless and off-putting message."

In a St. Louis Magazine article highlighting downtown Maplewood's retail options, one sentence didn't sit very well with Rachelle L'Ecuyer, the city's community development director.  The article, which ran in the magazine's November issue, included the line, "With Mezzanine and Monarch Restaurant closing in the past year, Maplewood’s boom seems to have slowed."  L'Ecuyer responded by submitting a letter for the magazine's February issue. In it, she wrote about the city's evolution into a "walkable historic downtown" over the past decade. She noted that the city contains only two vacant storefronts in downtown Maplewood, compared to more than 10 about seven years ago. She also wrote that Home Wine Kitchen was named "2012 Restaurant of the …

Who Ran Into the Monarch?

The Monarch restaurant, in Maplewood, was evidently hit by a car that didn't successfully make the turn onto Sutton.

Saturday morning, Sept. 15, it was evident to anyone driving by the Monarch, in Maplewood, that a vehicle hit the building hard enough to push in concrete and bricks. Maplewood Police Det. Kerry Daniels said it happened Friday night, but whoever is responsible was able to leave the scene. The department is investigating.

There are no cameras. However, there were a crowd of people outside of Jumping Jupiter when this happened who wrote down the car's license plate number. A witness told me that a car didn't see a person on a bike and hit that person then swerved into the building. As they were backing up away from the building, the biker had to grab his bike and scramble away to avoid being run over.   more ›

As Monarch Restaurant Gets Ready to Close its Doors, Staff and Community Members Reflect

The long-standing Maplewood institution is set to close March 11 as owners look for a smaller location.

Monarch is one of the best restaurants in St. Louis. Everyone knows that, and we all assumed it would be around forever, eagerly waiting to impress our out-of-town family and friends with its cutting-edge menu and locally-sourced ingredients. Times have changed for the Monarch crew, however, and owners Jeff Orbin and Aaron Teitelbaum have found they can no longer keep up the enormous building, and subsequent costs, at 7401 Manchester Road. Current economic circumstances are keeping St. Louis diners closer to home and lower-priced restaurants, the owners said, and there's not much they can do about it. They will close the restaurant's doors on March 11. In a recent press release, Orbin and Teitelbaum stated: "We couldn't be more proud of …
