Campaign confirms the Missouri Senator has called off campaign events for the remainder of the week.
A campaign spokeswoman confirmed late Tuesday afternoon to Patch that Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill is off the campaign trail for the rest of the week as her family rallies around her ailing mother, Betty Anne, 84. Earlier, the campaign told the Associated Press that "McCaskill and her siblings plan to be with their mother around-the-clock at the hospital and requested prayers and privacy," at a St. Louis hospital's Intensive Care Unit. Her Republican opponent, U.S. Representative Todd Akin, tweeted a link to the AP story along with words of support. "Our thoughts & prayers are with @clairecmc and her mother," the message said.
McCaskill spoke about veterans issues at two VFW halls Wednesday.

Claire McCaskill sidestepped reporters’ questions Wednesday about whether Congressman Todd Akin should stay in the race following his comments about legitimate rape. “Missourians who voted in the Republican primary have nominated Todd Akin,” she said. “I think this election will provide very stark contrast between Todd Akin and me,” she told reporters. "I look forward to showing Missourians how we differ on many issues. Gregg, thanks for the cutline on the photo about the one voter wearing an Obama hat. As the person who witnessed it, I let the supervisor at Parkway Northeast Middle School precinct know about it. She felt bad and was apologetic. But the man was seen by two sets of election judges before he got into the voting line. How did they miss something less than 3 feet in front of them?   more ›
