Medina is an honor student and volleyball captain. She said she wants to give back to Maplewood Richmond Heights.
Mariah Medina came from New Life Christian Academy, in Bridgeton, MO, when she was a sophomore. “I think I had eight people in my class,” she said. “I was a little nervous because I had never been at a public school before.” She’s now a Maplewood Richmond Heights senior, and the National Honors Society chapter president and MRH Student Council president. She was also recently captain of the volleyball team. She arrived in volleyball season. She signed up and made varsity her first year. “I had been playing for a while, but I was never able to experience an actual team until I came to Maplewood,” she said. “I was welcomed with opened arms. Coach (Cheryl) Carmon made it so much easier.” She said she loves the team aspect of the sport. “We …

The teams posed for a group photo before their game on Tuesday.
The Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights volleyball teams came together for one big group photo before their recent game at MRH. They made silly faces, but MRH senior, Mariah Medina, said it’s important. “I wanted to take a picture with them because we’re coming together for breast cancer,” she said. “Even though we’re rival teams, it’s awesome to have a picture together and really show support for breast cancer.” Spectators were charged to enter the game, with proceeds going to breast cancer research. See more photos of both teams at Maplewood-Brentwood Patch Facebook. Brentwood senior, Nora Durham, said they like to play up the rivalry, but they can get together together for a good cause. “It’s a fun time,” she said. “I’m excited to …

It was MRH's first come-from-behind win of the year.
Maplewood Richmond Heights volleyball brought its crowd and best game to Brentwood on Friday, winning in two come-from-behind games. In the first game, the Blue Devils jumped to a 7-1 lead, then let the Eagles even it at 12. MRH was behind 20-16 before the 25-22 win in game one. It was Brentwood that had a 7-1 lead in game two. The score was 21-17 for the Eagles before MRH began its comeback. The game was tied at 23 and 24 before MRH won game two 26-24. “I’m very proud of my girls,” said head coach Cheryl Carmon. “It’s actually the first time we’ve come from behind to win. “Everybody fought hard on both sides, and we just got lucky and came out on top,” Carmon said. The match was Brentwood coach Whitney Ralph’s first Brentwood-MRH game. …

The last points of game two are shown in this video shot from the Maplewood Richmond Heights stands.
Here, for inspiration for both Maplewood Richmond Heights and Brentwood volleyball, is a YouTube video of the last points of game two of the 2011 district final. Played at MRH, the video was shot from the upper seats of the stands, and uploaded by MaxTheLife on Oct 29. MRH won the game 23-25. MRH went on to win game three and the district championship, as reported in Maplewood-Brentwood Patch. The last minutes of game three, and the MRH win, resulted in not unexpected chaos. They played in rival colleges in the same conference.

She also said she’s been around volleyball since she was four. Brentwood has a freshman team too. See more photos on Maplewood-Brentwood Facebook! (Like it!) Coach Cheryl Carmon expects to defend their District title "with authority."
This year the Maplewood Richmond Heights volleyball team has some extra added inspiration: watching the U.S. National Team play in the Summer Olympics. Maplewood Richmond Heights head volleyball coach Cheryl Carmon said she’s glad the Olympics happened right before this, and the women are doing so well. See more photos on Maplewood-Brentwood Patch Facebook. “The first day we came back, I said, ‘What have you seen that they do that we don’t do?’ and we came up with a whole list of things that we’re going to be working on, just to up our play.” What excites Carmon most this season is that they have a freshman team. “We have had 35 to 40 girls playing volleyball in the past, and we have it again this year, so they got us a freshman coach,” …

The girls volleyball team upset the No. 1-seeded Brentwood Eagles.
Archrivals Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights played each other four times this season, with the Eagles winning three of those matchups in impressive fashion, and earning themselves the No. 1 seed in the Class 2 District 5 playoffs. But MRH showed those previous matchups didn’t matter, as the Devils won a heart-stopping championship game over the Eagles last Wednesday, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20. Mariah Russell had 10 kills and Brittney Poole had 16 assists, as the Devils avenged a loss to Brentwood in the 2010 district volleyball championship game. Over the weekend, the Devils faced Fatima (MO) in the sectional round. MRH lost that game and ended its season with a 16-16-3 record. Brentwood ended its year with a 20-10-2 mark, and finished …
