Tired of hearing about heat domes, urban heat islands and plain old heat waves? Try an icy drink at one of these Brentwood or Maplewood locals. Mr. Wizard’s has shakes, floats, shushes, snow cones and 26 kinds of sundaes and concretes, plus your choice of 35 toppings. The owner said turtles are the number one seller, though slushes and snow cones do well when it’s this hot. The custard is smooth and cold, but my chocolate kiddie-size cone didn’t have a chance to melt. It went down too fast. The guy on the stool next to me at Carl’s Drive In happened to be named Carl. I took my three-year-old for a Sno Cone yesterday. This place sits within Memorial Park, so it ideal ... fyi, they also sell snacks (hot dogs, nachos). Very friendly service!   more ›

Snow Cones to Kick Off Summer

At Southern Sno in Brentwood, it's not really summer until the umbrellas go up.

Ah, snow cones. We've all had one, or two or three, to stave off hot summer days. Brentwood is lucky enough to have some of the best around at Southern Sno, and the snow cone stand just kicked off its summer season. Owners Karen and Jay Davis have owned the stand for 13 years now, having become over time—and through word of mouth—a favorite summer hangout spot. The secret to Southern Sno's refreshing treat is the ice, said Karen Davis, a former school teacher. "The temperature of the ice makes a big difference," she said.
