These local businesses offer a great selection of gifts under $20 for those on your holiday shopping list.

I may or may not break down gift sets into multiple presents for friends, I repurpose paper bags from Trader Joes into wrapping paper, and I’m the queen of regifting. Well, now my dirty little secrets are out, but judging by the crowds I witnessed on Black Friday, I’m not the only person who lives for a great deal. And in this economy, everyone can certainly stand to save a buck or two on holiday gifts. Luckily, Maplewood and Brentwood are full of great local shops that offer a variety of budget-friendly holiday gifts. Many people assume that locally-owned businesses …

The second-annual Maplewood Coffee Crawl featured self-guided tours of local businesses, which offered tastings, treats, demonstrations and recipes.
Local business owners involved in Saturday's Maplewood Coffee Crawl are calling the event a success based on the spike in attendance over last year. This is the second year for the event. Attendees said the crawl offered them a way to discover new venues in the area. Participating businesses included: Cheryl's Herbs; Foundation Grounds; Kakao Chocolate; Schlafly; Stone Spiral Coffee & Curios; the Turner Center for the Arts; and Vom Fass. "I don't know if we would have come in [to Vom Fass] and checked out all the things and tasted all the different samples unless this coffee crawl was going on," said Lindsey Roy. "We tend to frequent some of the other places, but these are new for us, so we really like it." Other attendees highlighted …

The indie folk duo from Maplewood has already raised more than $1,000.
Ask the management of Stone Spiral Coffee and Curios to name an up-and-coming local band, and they will offer two words: My Molly. A pair of 21-year-olds comprises the band from Maplewood. Rebecca Hanneken plays guitar and tambourine (with her feet) while Mallory Barnes holds down the floor tom, glockenspiel and other hand percussion. After becoming known for their trademark two-part harmony at Stone Spiral's weekly open mic nights, the two have wowed their way into an album—their first—with an indie label founded in St. Louis and currently operating out of Denver. “We’re part of Morning Bird Records, and they’ve been pushing us to do an album,” Hanneken said. As for their specific musical genre? It's not so cut and dry. "We don't …

A group of poets and musicians performs each Wednesday night at the coffee shop.
On one night each week, Stone Spiral Coffee and Curios takes a break from its solid block of nightly band bookings to allow for poetry, amateur musicians and even stand-up comedians. Don't be fooled by the flier you see taped up on the wall; the Wednesday open mic sessions never begin at 7 p.m. or end at 9 p.m. The event, founded and organized by south St. Louis city resident John Bernardy, usually begins closer to 8 p.m. It's structured to allow each performer a few minutes of microphone time before passing it off to the next person. Then, after everyone on the sign-up sheet has performed, the emcee cycles back through the list again for round two. Bernardy started the weekly gathering in October 2008, only a few months after the coffee …
