Denise Lee Dealing with bullying is tough — really tough.  My natural response with my kids is to go into hyper-protective-mom-mode with sonic speed. But my natural response may not help the situation and may in fact exacerbate it. So I have to navigate…

When we were growing up it was easy to spot (and avoid) bullies, but today our children deal with "faceless" bullies on-line. Bullies get to hide behind a screen name and don't have to actually face the people they intimidate or tease. Parents and teachers need to have candid discussions with their children and …   more ›

Even though Whole Foods can get expensive, they have some reasonably priced dinner specials on different days of the week ranging from rotisserie chickens to paninis. It is a great way to eat affordable healthy (and delicious) meals for busy families. When I was pregnant my husband was left to do all of the shopping (I couldn't stand to be around food) and it was a foolproof way to make sure we …   more ›

Victoria: I agree completely with your comment – “PAT is essentially an investment in our community”. There is an interesting article by Liz Szabo in USA Today (http://yourlife.usatoday.com/parenting-family/story/2011/02/Early-childhood-education-benefits-both-kids-taxpayers-study-says/43259964/1) which described a study from the National Institutes of Health; the study found that every dollar …   more ›

As a new mom I appreciate all of these great ideas! This is the first winter with my son, Jack (8 months), but we have enjoyed sledding down the hill in our front yard, walking around the Missouri Botanical Garden, and making last minute trips to Whole Foods (infants find the simplest things amusing) on snowy days. We have even found swimming at The Heights is a nice treat – nothing beats …   more ›

MRH Youth Sports Needs More Volunteers

The Maplewood Richmond Heights Youth Sports group has outgrown its core group of adult volunteers, and needs more to support the hundreds of kids who sign up to play.

CLAYTON — On a recent Saturday at the Center of Clayton, Dave Sendejas coached his basketball team of sixth-grade boys against a team from Forsyth School in Clayton. He spent more time offering encouragement than talking strategy, but that's fine with him. Sendejas, co-owner of the Post Sports Bar and Grill, is happy to offer his time and services to the volunteer-supported Maplewood Richmond Heights Youth Sports. “When Adrian (Glass) and I opened up The Post, we wanted to get more involved in the Maplewood community," Sendejas said. "We thought the quickest and best way to do that would be to volunteer to coach some of the youth teams.” The youth sports program needs more volunteers like Sendejas, and a lot more of them than they had a …
