On June 8, Vom Fass and Kakao Chocolate teamed up for Peculiar Pairings: Ice cream, oil and balsamic vinegar. It was a fundraiser where adventuresome foodies could try things like vanilla ice cream topped with pumpkin seed vinegar and a bit of sea salt. The food combinations may have been “peculiar,” but the pairing of Vom Fass and Kakao, in Maplewood, along with other foodie spots like Penzeys Spices has proved to be synergistic. For Vom Fass, the Maplewood franchise is the second-highest grossing Vom Fass in the United States. He said it had been part of the plan, but the economy has pushed his schedule up.
Tim Rohan, owner of T. Rohan Interior Design for 27 years, is consolidating his business to the second floor of his building. He plans to rent out the first floor. Rohan owns three buildings on Manchester Road, in Maplewood. Charm Boutique and Vom Fass are his tenants. “I’m 55 now and my game plan was at some point I would start shrinking down,” he said. “The economy is pushing it a little earlier than I expected. Folks came from all over to walk Maplewood's streets, and sample great coffee and other goodies.
The third annual Maplewood Coffee Crawl pulled coffee-lovers from Chesterfield to south St. Louis city. It was sponsored by the Maplewood Special Business District and Feast Magazine. They had room for 500, and hit that number days before the event. Maplewood businesses Cheryl's Herbs, Foundation Grounds, Kakao Chocolate, Stone Spiral Coffee and Currios, Schlafly Bottleworks, Turner Center for the Arts, and Vom Fass took part, featuring a coffee roaster or in the case of Cheryl's Herbs, several teas.
