ReplyExcellent tribute, Jim. This was very sad to hear, and it's refreshing to hear your take on a man you knew well.
I met Lee my one and only time this past winter when tasked to write a profile about him, and can say the meeting had a profound affect on me. His courage and strength I had read about was beyond impressive, but it was his amicable demeanor and conversation I will remember. What started as a nervous interview, ended as a fun and engaging talk; all while he was coaching his basketball team with a chemotherapy tube pumping into his body. A class act...I feel lucky to have gotten the opportunity to meet him.

Thanks Laura! The Woodshop is truly a wonderful place to visit, especially with the kids milling around with different projects, buzzing with excitement. They don't even realize just how much they're learning with all the fun they're having.

ReplyWhat an excellent, insightful look into the mind of a parent. I, too, read that Chua article, and was equally impressed and envious with the seemingly unflinching confidence in the parenting style.
I am not a parent, but want to be one in the somewhat near future, and know for a fact that I would never be so headstrong in any approach, and it's nice to know that for the most part, every new parent must feel that sense of "ok i have a kid....now what?" I get nervous with a puppy, I can only imagine the feeling of a newborn.
Great first installment of this column, Laura, I look forward to many more.

ReplyI'm a huge fan of free speech and how important it is for people to be able to say what they want, but there comes a point when someone needs to step in and stop speech with malicious intent.
I can't imagine losing a beloved family member, and then seeing a group of people picketing egregiously outside the services.
They should be ashamed that their views of God permit them to sling hatred at those during their time of bereavement.
To me, it's a similar naivete/ignorance that has caused those in the Middle East to justify murder through the readings in the Qu'ran. -

ReplyI'll reiterate the praise for King's Speech...I saw it today and the storytelling is phenomenal. The fact that it is a true one only raises the stakes and the actors really do it justice.
