I am 100% against using public funds for private schools. The way I see it, if you opt out, and I consider it opting out of one's civic responsibility, it's on your dime. Otherwise, be engaged in your public schools and demand excellence.

If adjusted for inflation since the early 60s, minimum wage would be something like $10 an hour today.

"a result of a dying pubic education system"
Public education is dying? Is that a fact or a talking point?

Reply^Furthermore, if you are living on $9 or $10 an hour, your opportunities for personal advancement are severely limited if you don't have the financial support of family to rely on! You will not be able to afford insurance, continuing education, childcare, rent, etc. It is a poverty trap. That benefits no one.

Reply^ Most professionals I know bill anywhere between $125 and $275 an hour depending on their experience and skillset, or the firm they represent does. So, I'm not sure what your point is re the $200/hr thing. These folks are asking for $15 so they can get $11 or $12. I don't think paying an extra $.25 or whatever for a burger is going to break the bank!

Let me put it this way: if I were in GOP leadership, and I were conducting a SWOT, the "threat" quadrant would most certainly have demographic trends toward higher education in it. The idea that GOP leadership would conduct a SWOT, and such a threat would be revealed, isn't at all far fetched, as it is a common competitive analysis tool.

^That goes without saying. I think their goal is to ghetto-ize public schools in the public's mind as a place only "other peoples' kids" go to, push middle and upper class kids into schools that don't have federal or state oversight, and use that lack of oversight to subtly indoctrinate the kids into "conservative" or "biblical" ideologies. The increase in bachelors' degrees and the critical thinking skills they represent are a major demographic death knell for the GOP's brand of 'conservatism' looking forward, so it is natural that they would want to take aim at the threat that is schools. All this talk of homeschooling, vouchers, charter schools, online education, providing student loans for for-profit schools, and the 'worthlessness' of college degrees...is surely aimed at that goal.

I am 100% against using public funds for private schools. The way I see it, if you opt out, and I consider it opting out of one's civic responsibility since engaged parents are the lifeblood of public schools, it absolutely should be on your dime. Otherwise, be engaged in your public schools and demand excellence.
